Snack/mealtimes: During mealtime students often share their food, adults can model to students how to let others know of their dietary needs/restrictions. If a friend offers them a snack and a student cannot eat it they can indicate their dietary restrictions, e.g., “Soy vegetariano” (I am vegetarian), e.g., “Gracias, pero soy alérgico a los cacahuates”  (Thank you, but I am allergic to peanuts).

Circle: During circle time students can identify their photo or share information about themselves to peers, e.g., ese soy yo (That is me), soy de... (I am from).”

Roles/responsibilities: Students can identify what their role for the day or week is based on what their teacher assigned them, e.g., “Soy el líder de la línea hoy” (I am line leader today).

Guessing Game: Students can use ‘soy’ during a guessing game to describe characteristics and provide hints to their classmates about what they are. For example, if they are trying to have their classmate guess that they are a zebra, the student can say e.g., “Soy un animal. Soy grande. Soy blanco y negro, tengo rayas, quién soy?” (I am an animal. I am big. I am white and black. I have stripes. Who am I?)

Pretend play: During dress up, students can use ‘soy’ to let their friends know what they dressed up as, e.g., “Soy una princesa” (I am a princess).

Here are some suggested books that can assist in teaching the core words:

Books in Spanish:

  • Qué Soy Yo?: By Phoebe McGuffee y Brenda Doran | Book from Unite Literacy

    • This book focuses on 4 animals, a zebra, elephant, giraffe, and peacock. It provides hints, describing the characteristics of each animal and then asking the student to guess what animal it is.
  • Soy científico: By Ann Francis | Book from Unite Literacy

    • This book focuses on being a scientist and the different things they study as scientists.
  • Me gusta como soy (I like how I am): By Karen Beaumont |Children’s Book Read aloud

    • This book focuses on self-esteem and encourages kids to appreciate everything about themselves--inside and out.
  • Soy un artista: By Marta Altés | Children’s Book Read aloud

    • This book is about a boy who considers himself an artist like his mom and his adventures as an artist.

Bilingual books:

  • Soy René, el niño:  By René Colato Laínez

    • This book focuses on the differences between names in Spanish and English. René learns that in the U.S., where he is currently living, his name is also used by girls and not just by boys like in his country.

Students can go one at a time and introduce themselves. The teachers can prompt each student to share three facts about themselves to the class in a show and tell like fashion. Students have the opportunity to say the word “soy" (I am) and hear their peers say it in the appropriate way as well.

Here is a sample communication board that provides access to pronouns, verbs, questions, and comments. When you click on yo then soy comes up automatically.

During motor activities or PE, students can indicate when it is their turn to go next. The activity could be similar to red light green light except students can only move if the question pertains to them. For example, the teacher can say, “who is the oldest child?” and the students can be prompted to say, “Soy la mayor (I am the oldest).” The activity continues until someone reaches the end and wins.

Students can participate in “All About Me” activities containing pictures and information about themselves. When reviewed together, repeatedly, adults can model the word, soy.

All About Me Activities:

This activity can be great to be done at the beginning of the year, so students can share who they are.

Who am I? A vision board for kids. Students participate by creating a vision board of who they are. They can say things like “soy una hija (I am a daughter)”

The teachers can make one as well to model the word soy.

Angry Birds App: While playing the Angry Birds app game, have the students take turns saying, (Soy). Model the vocabulary and expand the utterances 1-2 words beyond their typical length of utterance.
