This activity sheet was adapted from the School Year of Core Words activities for “no” by Shanaz Faisal @ sfaisal@mail.sfsu.edu.  For specific questions or more ideas regarding this core word activity sheet, please contact Sofia Ortiz-Blandon @ fortiz1@mail.sfsu.edu. Thank you!

Snack/mealtimes: Snack and mealtime is a great setting to teach students valuable communication skills. Students can indicate to adults which food or drink they do not want by saying no to the food/drink that they want. Adults can ask the student  “¿Quieres esto?” (Do you want this?) while offering a specific food or drink. Students can respond “no” or “no gracias.”

Circle: Adults can ask the students questions that will elicit a no response. For example, ask the student “¿Es invierno?  (Is it Winter right now?). Assuming that it is not winter, students will respond “no, es primavera” (no, it is spring). The more opportunities that are created for the child to respond ‘no’, the better.  If this is a new concept, visual support for choices for a response is important. Adults can also model the target word when asking students to put the correct season on the communication board during circle time.

Puzzles: Adults model no as they place each puzzle piece into an incorrect spot so that the puzzle piece does not fit. The adult can then hold the puzzle piece of the incorrect place and wait for the child to indicate “no,”no allí no” before switching the puzzle over to the correct spot. When the puzzle piece is at the correct spot, the child can go a step further and indicate “sí,” “Sí, ponlo allí.”

Here are some suggested books on YouTube that can assist in teaching the core word:

This video features modeling with kids, adults, and puppets saying “me gusta o no me gusta” with various foods and activities. This video can help children find diffrerent opportunities to use the word no.

Create a mystery box/sensory box filled with uncooked rice and beans. Inside of the box, hide toy food or other small toys. Ask student to close their eyes and choose an object. Ask student questions about the object that will yield a “no” answer. For example, if the child chooses a green grape aske the child “¿es una naranja? (is this an oragne?) and the student will respond “no.”

    • This short clip features the core word no many times throughout the video. This clip is from the Nickelodeon Tv Show Dora the Explorer.

Students can indicate no during categorization/organization activities. For this activity you will need two containers/boxes and toy foods or animals. If you are using the toy foods categorize them into fruits or vegetables etc. Present the child with one object at a time and ask them incorrect questions about the toy. For example, if you present the child with a toy grape ask them ¿es una verdura? (is this a vegetable?) and the child will respond “no!”

Stop sign art projects. Students, with the assistance on an adult, can create stop signs that say no on them.

  1. Students will place their hand on a white sheet of paper and trace their hand. Or they can trace their hand in the shape of a thumbs down.
  2.  Cut out their hand and glue it onto a red piece of paper.
  3. On the red piece of paper write out the word no.
  4. The student will then cut out the red paper into a circle or hexagon to resemble a stop sign.
