SHARE INFORMATION:Me gusta nadar. Me gusta ir a la playa.” (I like to swim. I like to go to the beach.)

EXPRESS AN OPINION: “Me gusta leer, me gustan los dinosaurios.” (I like to read, I like dinosaurs.)

COMMENT:  “Eso me gusta. A mi hermano le gusta escribir” (I like that. My brother likes to write.)

ANSWER QUESTIONS:  “Sí, me gusta comer la sopa. No me gusta el queso.” (I like to eat soup. I don’t like cheese.)

DISAGREE: “Pero eso no me gusta. No me gusta cantar.” (But I don’t like that. I don’t like to sing.)

Arrival Time: Adult may give a compliment to the student (e.g., “Me gusta tu mochila”).

Snack/mealtimes: Adults may use the AAC device/tech board to model and show the student what they like to eat, then pause and wait for the adult to indicate what they like to eat, too. (e.g., Me gusta comer...)

Circle: Students can have show and tell and show their classmates something that they like. Adult may model on the board, and something that they like. (e.g, “a mi me gusta la manzana” and point to their apple. Adult may wait for students to respond with their board and item) Another example: Adult may point to images on a board and ask students, e.g.“¿A ti te gustan los perros? ¿A ti te gustan los gatos?” (do you like dogs?do you like cats?) and wait for students to respond.”

Getting dressed: Parent/caregiver may give the child two options of clothing items. The adult may ask, “¿cuál te gusta? La camiseta roja o la camiseta azul?” (which one do you like? The red t-shirt or the blue one?)

Toys and Games: Students can use their board to indicate what toys they like. (e.g., me gusta este carro, me gusta este mono (I like this car; I like this monkey).

Recess: Students may use their board to indicate what they would like to play with/use (e.g., I like the swings/me gustan los columpios; I like the slide/me gusta el resbaladero; I like to play in the sand/ Me gusta jugar en la arena).

Here are some suggested books on YouTube that can assist in teaching the core word:

Students may be paired up with a partner during morning meetings. They may rehearse as needed and ask, “What do you like to eat/¿Qué te gusta comer?” “¿Qué te gusta hacer/What do you like to do? ¿Qué color te gusta/What color do you like?”

Students and adults can use a sensory bin/table with a variety of objects and textures, such as shaving cream, a pine cone, a stone, a stuffed animal. Two large bowls may be labeled “Like” and the other may be labeled “Dislike”/They may be labeled “me gusta/no me gusta.” Adult may model by taking an object, feeling it, and putting it in the appropriate bin while playing the phrase on the AAC board. Student may do the same. Student may also use the board to comment on which item they would like to play with.

Adults and students can put together simple snacks with crackers, deli, fruit, jam. Adults can help them choose ingredients while prompting student to answer with their board. (e.g., yes, I like ham. No, I do not like strawberry jelly/ Sí, me gusta el jamón. No, no me gusta la mermelada de fresa).

 Students/Adults can try a simple finger-painting activity together. As they are painting together, adults may ask prompting questions:

A: Do you like blue?/¿Te gusta el azul?

S: Sí, me gusta el azul. También me gusta el rojo (Yes, I like blue. I also like red)

Students/Adults may take a nature walk together outside. Adults may point to objects and model with the AAC board. “me gustan las flores/ I like flowers” Adults may also comment what they see others doing and comment on what the student is doing. “A Alexis le gusta brincar en los charcos/ Alexis likes to jump in the puddles” The student may repeat on their board after the action is complete if they wish. “Me gusta brincar en los charcos/I like to jump in the puddles."

WORD WALL:  Add ‘gustar’ to the word wall.

READING and the Word Wall: Sound out the letters together. Have the students find the word on the AAC system.

WRITING and the Word Wall: Using a pencil or alternative pencil, have students try to type the word on the keyboard or write the word together.
