CLOSINGS: Adiós ____ (name).

CESSATION/INDICATE FINISHED: Adiós _____ (item), (e.g., a child could say adiós to a toy and then put it away).

COMMENTING/SHARING INFORMATION: Saying ‘adiós’ to someone we love and care about that has left or is leaving is very hard.

EXPRESS FEELINGS: Sometimes saying ‘adiós’ after a fun day makes me sad.

Putting toys, books, or materials away; adiós __ (toy/item)

After lunch/Cleaning up after snack:  Leave the table and say, “Adiós

Circle Time or Morning Meeting: While meeting, indicate “adiós’ when a student leaves the circle to get ready to go home.

Leaving for the bus: When leaving for the bus, adults can use ALS to say and model the word on the talker and the student can say ‘adiós’ to family or friends.  This provides direct and immediate reinforcement to learn what the word means in this natural setting.

Leaving the train or any mode of transportation: The adult can cue the student, (e.g. ‘oh, it’s leaving’ (referring to the vehicle the student arrived in), and then model, ‘adiós’.

Leaving to go on community outings for adults: Teens and adults could say ‘adiós’ to others who are not going out in the community

Laundry:  The adult and student can bring dirty laundry over to the machine. As the student places each item inside, they can all say, ‘adiós.’

Closing song: Adults can play a closing song at the end of the day, the session or the game, such as “Adiós Amigos.”

Students can utilize their talkers/communication systems to say adiós to others at the end of the day when leaving another classroom or even a Zoom Meeting. This is a great way to focus on acknowledging others before they or someone leaves. Adults can model, without expecting students to imitate.

For students who are younger in age, you may use ALS to say ‘adiós’ and duck down from sight and then pop up again and say, ‘hola.’

Adults together with students/individuals can also say ‘adiós’ to toys or books when the activity is complete.

Once recess is over, saying ‘adiós’ to fellow peers in other classes is important and meaningful. Adults can wait for a response from the other student(s) if appropriate or helpful.

The students could use puppets to say hola and ‘adiós’ to each other.

In pretend play, when someone has to depart the game, (e.g. musical chairs or duck-duck-goose), students can say ‘adiós’ when they leave the game.

Bye-Felicia or Girl-bye…. During dress-up, once they are ready, students can look in the mirror and say, ‘adiós’, I’m going out…..

When playing with the iPad, students can say ‘adiós’ when the characters leave the screen, when the song is over, or if the character says, ‘adiós.’

Reading is a great time to model the use of new words on the AAC/communication device. For this week's words, each time you turn the page you can say, ‘adiós’ to the characters on the page.

Here are some suggested books on YouTube that can assist in teaching the core word:

Spanish-Bilingual

  • Adiós, Tricycle (Spanish Edition - bilingual) Read aloud, read along. Written By: Susan Middleton Elya, with illustrations by Elisabeth Schlossberg

    • This book contains a mix of Spanish vocabulary about saying goodbye to things you've outgrown. It normalizes code-switching which is a natural communicative strategy that is typical for bilingual individuals. Read by Tia Carla.
  • GOODNIGHT MOON / BUENAS NOCHES, LUNA BY MARGARET WISE BROWN / ENGLISH & SPANISH READ ALOUD

    • When they say goodnight to different objects, the adult could take the opportunity to also say, adiós. Read by: Read it Again
  • Oso Cafe, Oso Cafe, Book by Bill Martin, Jr., and illustrations by Eric Carle. Read by pgphotographyanddesign

    • As the pages are turned, the students can take the opportunity to say ‘adiós’ to each animal.

When going outside for recess or break time, the student could say, adiós to others who are staying inside.

If a visiting adult or student leaves the room, this provides an opportunity for the student(s) to say adiós.

The students could watch a videotaped puppet show where two or more puppets met each other, said, ‘hola,’ played a game, and then indicated, ‘all done’ or ‘I go’ and then said, ‘adiós’ on the talker/communication system.

The adult can provide a voice-over and substitute adiós, for goodbye in this situation.

Also, using the iPad, the students could create their own video modeling video saying ‘adiós’ to their friends and others as they leave the room.

Here is a communication board that could be utilized for an emerging communicator. (This was part of a multiple-page system).

communication board including the word "goodbye"

(Another board like this could be created in Spanish or the adults could take a screenshot of the communication system in the native language to provide access to a low-tech social page to demonstrate the word, adiós).

How to say “hola’ and ‘adiós’ using visual supports by Arasaac. Please refer to these symbolic visuals to assist in teaching social interactions, saying hola and adiós. Created by Arasaac.

Playing a hide-and-seek game can be a fun way to say adiós with an immediate reaction. We say adiós to the student who goes to hide (and may be accompanied by an adult) and then we can say ‘hola’ when we find them.

Use a mirror and practice saying ‘hola’ and ‘adiós’ to their or another’s reflection.

Using the student’s or classroom communication device or communication board, the adult can point to and model the use of the word: Adiós and talk about when to say adiós.  Consider a discussion about how we say adiós at the end of the day, how we say adiós to our Moms or Dads when we leave for school in the morning, or how we say adiós to our friends or when leaving school.

Adults can use predictable chart writing to help students learn to spell and read words and to provide visuals to help say adiós to their friends.

Please consider using the following to assist in teaching the core word:

Wordless animated-short

Bilingual Spanish and English

Spanish Songs

Make Sock Puppets and use them to play hide and seek or to interact and say, ‘hola’ and adiós with them.

The Hello-Goodbye Window: Create a paper window with construction paper and add a curtain on a string adhering it with tape or glue making sure it can open and close. Place different pictures behind the paper window. Close and open the curtains to say, hola and adiós. By Jennifer Venn-Johnson on Pinterest.

Pictello app: Use the iPad to take pictures of all the students in the class or group, and upload each student's photo to a single page to create an Adiós book.  Program each page to say, in written form and with the use of synthesized or recorded speech, Adiós + the name of the friend/person. This could provide a structured opportunity to learn to say adiós to friends. This book could be read at the end of the day to attach further meaning to the word, adiós, when they leave to go home or end the class or session.

Adiós Class…goodbye (objects in the class, activities, (Like a Goodnight Moon)

Book Creator app: Book Creator app, is highly similar to the Pictello app, but with Book Creator, students can be very creative with importing other photos and drawing or writing on the books with a variety of colors. Text can be read via synthesized speech or with recorded speech.

Sock Puppets: Sock puppets provide a way for students to act out the recorded dialogue. How it works: First, select your characters, then background, then props. Voila- you will see the puppets on the stage. Press the round ‘record’ button and as you move each puppet, it will record what is spoken. Once completed, hit the square ‘stop’ button and the sounds and puppet movement will play back. Adults and students can create puppet shows together.

YoPuppet: YoPuppet is an ingenious and easy-to-use puppet show creator and your face is in the show. (If you were a ventriloquist, (which I’m not but wish I was), you could really amaze the students. How it works: Pick a character, then line your hand up with the hand symbol on the app and the puppet will sync with your hand movements so that you can create and record a puppet show. What a fun way to learn how to say, ‘adiós’ when you’re done or finished.

WORD WALL- Add the word, adiós on the Word Wall.

READING and the Word Wall: Sound out the letters together. Have the students find the word on the AAC system.

WRITING and the Word Wall: Using a pencil or alternative pencil, have students try to type the word on the keyboard, adapted keyboard or write the word together.
